Biography

Giovanni Di Antonio, FRAeS, is the Director of the Technological Innovation Department at ENAC, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority. He oversees spaceport development, commercial suborbital transportation, and the development of concepts for Higher Airspace Operations (HAO).

 

He is currently serving his second term as the Chair of JARUS (the Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems), to which he has contributed continuously since 2013, particularly in the fields of airworthiness, risk management, and concepts of operations.

 

Giovanni graduated in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” where he also earned a Master’s degree in Composites and Nanotechnology for Aerospace. With over 20 years of experience in the defence and aviation sectors, he has extensive expertise in airworthiness as an EASA expert and in UAS regulation, authorisation, and operations. He has played a key role in developing the National Strategic Plan for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and ENAC’s Regulatory Sandbox guidelines.

 

In his HAO-related role, Giovanni chaired the EASA Task Force responsible for the preparatory work for future European HAO regulations. He contributed to developing the European Concept of Higher Airspace Operations within the SESAR “ECHO” project and is currently the Solution Leader for the airspace integration of supersonic, hypersonic, and suborbital flights within the European ATM system as part of the ongoing SESAR “ECHO 2” project.
