Tim McCarthy

Biography

Tim McCarthy is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Maynooth University and a Principal Researcher in Earth Observation, Geospatial Science & Technologies.

He has led (PI/Co-PI) on over 36 externally funded research projects (€30M funding) including leading/co-leading 2 X Research Ireland Strategic Partnerships, 3 X Fellowship Programmes, multiple Research Centre Platform and Targeted Projects, IRC Industry Fellowships, also multiple  EU FP9, Horizon Europe and European Space Agency Projects projects.

As Co-Lead of Terrain-AI, a Research Ireland €5M project (co-funded by Microsoft Ireland), he has led research across disciplinary boundaries of computer science, earth science, climatology and sociology/anthropology, with industry , government and state agencies to the support response to Climate Change and promote more sustainable human management practices across farming, forestry, peatland and urban environments.

He was Principal Investigator on CoPilot-AI/DecaMap, a €1.3 million SFI-Defence Organisation Challenge award in 2023, directed towards the use of innovative AI (including Drones) and Earth Observation for real-time wildfire response.

He was appointed to the Marine Institute Board in 2024 and was awarded Fellowships in both Royal Institute of Navigation and Royal Aeronautical Society for his contributions as an educator and researcher in broader areas of Drones, Navigation and Aerospace. He has received nine national and international research awards, including those from Google, IBM and EU Copernicus Masters.
